Chemo and late effects

Every TCF guide on chemotherapy for testicular cancer, from your first cycle to life after your last one.

How chemo works

Chemotherapy uses drugs to stop cancer cells from growing, either by killing them or by stopping them from dividing. When the drugs go into a vein or are taken by mouth, they travel through the bloodstream and can reach cancer cells throughout the body.

Some treatments for testicular cancer can cause infertility that may be permanent. If there's any chance you'll want kids, ask about sperm banking before chemo starts.

High-dose chemo with stem cell transplant

High doses of chemo kill cancer cells, but they also destroy healthy blood-forming cells. So before treatment, stem cells are collected from the patient's blood or bone marrow (or from a donor), frozen, and stored. After chemo, they're thawed and given back through an infusion, where they grow into new blood cells.
