Types of testicular cancer

Almost all testicular cancers start in germ cells, the cells that make sperm. The two main types are seminoma and nonseminoma. Here's how they differ, and TCF's guides to each type and stage.

Seminoma vs nonseminoma

Seminomas and nonseminomas grow and spread differently, and they're treated differently.

  • Nonseminomas tend to grow and spread more quickly than seminomas.
  • Seminomas are more sensitive to radiation.
  • Mixed tumors, with both seminoma and nonseminoma cells, are treated as nonseminomas.

The type is found after the testicle is removed and the tissue is checked under a microscope. It's one of the things, along with stage, tumor size, and tumor marker levels, that shapes the treatment plan.

Seminoma guides

Aşamalar

Testicular cancer is staged from 0 to III. There is no stage IV. Start with the overview, then go to the guide for your stage.

Outlook

Testicular cancer can usually be cured, even in late stages. The number of new cases has doubled over the last 40 years, but deaths have dropped greatly because of better treatments. Doctors also sort tumors into good, intermediate, and poor prognosis groups based on how well they're expected to respond to treatment. There is no poor prognosis group for seminoma.
